Doris Dowling is one scary bitch and Will Wright as the house dick is suitably creepy. The main cast is quite good. Plus the cops don't jump to the easy conclusions here like so many other Films Noir. The ending is kinda unexpected. The movie skirts around some interesting topics - soldiers returning home and the changes they had to deal with in their relationships and injuries during the war that change their lives, not the focus of this movie obviously but well done in "The Best Years of Our Lives" (also 1946).

While not my favorite Veronica Lake (which is I Married A Witch, a comedy) this is still a very good movie.
