Synopsis
The film tells the story of Chinese guerrillas fighting for the Allied cause in Burma during Early in World War II, Chungking schoolteacher Lin Yang is recruited to help with the dangerous mission of protecting the Allied supply line from Burma into China. This World War II morale booster should have been titled "Bombs Over the Burma Road," since all of it is set in China and mostly on the road to Kunming. It opens well and even powerfully, and for the first fifteen minutes you think you might have stumbled upon an undiscovered gem. However, it quickly becomes a second rate spy melodrama with a farfetched plot. The cast is okay, and Anna May Wong does her best, but a bad screenplay and amateurish direction are too much to overcome. The production values are adequate to good for the type. Few people today even know what the dunce cap represented or why it was used...to degrade and humiliate kids to perform better in school.. I had it used on me once which made me distrust and basically hate my teacher, but that was a LONG time ago and I did bother to learn at some point without the use of dunce caps. It doesn't promote learning any more than locking people away in brutal prisons for years promotes peace and tranquility. The rest of the movie was OK though, but did use a lot of cliche's.
