Synopsis
After being away for a couple of years, Jerry Bolanti is back in his tough North Jersey neighborhood, close to swampy meadowlands where bodies get pulled from the trunks of cars and dumped. He's short on cash, so local boss Anthony Iadavia throws him some work--as a collector and a holdup man. But Jerry's a cocky hothead, so he makes enemies faster than he can deliver on the jobs. Not a great film, but actually quite a good independent release from the days before a true independent film movement existed. In addition, this is the film in which Scorsese and De Niro spotted Joe Pesci and, based upon his performance, invited him to audition for his role in "Raging Bull." The rest (as they say) is history. Frank Vincent, who also went on to a great career, is especially compelling.

The worst part of this movies were the wigs some of the lead actors wore. If you get past the ridiculous wigs, the acting is very professional and the characters are all believable. Joseph Cortese doesn't seem tough enough for the lead role, but all the other actors do an exceptional job with the their characters. The gangster lifestyle if not romanticized, and is shown as dismal, grimy, and unpleasant. This movie is definitely worth watching.
