I am moved by the deep sense of humanity portrayed in this well written movie. the characters lives show the love, loyalty,courage, suffering, personal fears during battle any person would face-no matter the nationality. -the script is excellent, no excess dialogue- a surprise movie I found today.definitely recommend

Whilst a lot of american war films concentrate on the gung-ho heroics, this film takes an altogether different angle concentrating a more human story of sacrifice and loss. It is important to remember that this was a propaganda film commisioned by the British government and so does seem a little moralising and patriotic in places. Never the less its still a brave film for the time with scenes of suffering and the chaos of war. The film is the first film directed by Davis Lean with Noel coward sharing directing credits. What wouldnt anyone give to have been part of this ship and served with this captain. One does not have to like war films to love this one and if he or she likes war flicks this has to be amongst the three best war movies ever made. What acting, what story telling, and what direction! All the more to be appreciated for the period of its production and an almost one-man show by that genius Noel Coward. How did this masterpiece ever get into the public domain one may ask? But in my selfish way of thinking I am glad it did as it can reach the multitude of viewers who did not get a chance to see…
