Synopsis
After financial improprieties are discovered at the Eastern trading company where he works, Peter Willems flees the resulting disgrace and criminal charges. He persuades the man who gave him his start in life, the merchant ship captain Lingard, to bring him to a trading post on a remote Indonesian island where he can hide out.

Carol Reed did a great job with Conrad's material. Very true to the book minus Part 5. While reading the last chapter of Part 4, I felt it could end there, and that's exactly what Reed did with it. There is so much good in the book but that particular chapter is an amazing, climatic, cinematic moment; you can see how much genius Conrad poured into it. The crux of everything is laid bare in the mad love that drove Willems to betray Lingard and Aissa's realization Willems resultant shame and regret has destroyed the man she loves. The accompanying storm in the book is well employed in the film.…

I have not read the original Conrad novel, but I cannot imagine he would have been wholly satisfied with Carol Reed's translation of this to the screen. However, this is worth seeing once for curiosity value. I ventured upon it whilst searching for Trevor Howard films, but this film belongs to Ralph Richardson, especially during the climax in the last ten minutes or so.
