Synopsis
The Rancho Grande, a Texas border ranch, cut off from the law by a gang of outlaws led by ranch foreman Bart Lane, who is holding the elderly owner of the ranch, Sarah Burton, a prisoner. Tex Lowery, an undercover Texas Ranger, rescues Martha Williams, a nurse sent for by the ailing Sarah, from a stagecoach holdup by Lane's henchmen. He later convinces Laner that he is a wanted outlaw named Ed Carter, and gains entry to Rancho Grande. But the real Ed Carter shows up.

Riders of the Frontier is a better than average western starring singing cowboy Tex Ritter. In a typical plot, Ritter is undercover as a wanted killer, Ed Carter in order to infiltrate the gang that is robbing cattle rancher Marin Sais (Sarah Burton) of her cattle. He manages to convince the cheating ranch foreman John Rutherford (Bart Lane) and all his henchmen Olin Frances, Nolan Willis and Merrill McCormick of his identity, but not Hal Taliaferro, with whom he has more than one fight. In one of those Ritter defends Manten Moreland (Chappie) the black cook - he also sings the Boll Weevil…

This production for Monogram in 1939 had such heavy hitters on the opposite side of the camera such as Scott Dunlop, Spencer Gordon Bennett, and William Nolte coupled with some better than average cast members behind "ole Tex", it couldn't fail. Tex himself was by now very secure in his persona and had enough experience to lead this picture with a certain swagger even. It didn't hurt to have a couple of stalwarts like Hal Talliaferro and Roy Barcroft in the cast either. Mantan Moreland is fine as a comedic cook and his duet with Tex on the old classic "Boll Weevil" is a highlight of the film.…
