Sam's Song (1969)

I find this movie interesting. It is slow paced with interactions of several different people in a 1970's social set of upper class people. The scenery is very colorful(or I'm just used to watching the older black and white films.) Suddenly there is a swap in the relationship that played out for most of the film, then its never going back. Its a captivating movie but rather low keyed. Try it.

Awkward, dorky and uncomfortable like only a 70's film can be. The theme is complications with love and sex in the free-wheeling 70's. All id and no introspection. Many things are hinted at, but go nowhere. No one really seems connected to anyone else. Robert de Niro (who I didn't recognize) plays Sam, who has all the seductive charm of your average acne-ridden 13 year old boy. But scores anyway! Ah, the 70's. Apparently no one has noticed yet that the blonde in this film is the SAME blond in the "greatest movie ever made" (according to John Waters and me) "Faster Pussycat Kill Kill!" Yup, no kidding.

I could only 'watch' this by leaping forward 5 minutes for every 30 seconds of actual viewing. You don't miss much & you only waste about 12 minutes of your busy day. I actually liked the long shots in the garden at the start of the film but once Sam & Carole hit the beach this movie ground to a halt. Still, I loved the utterly absurd dialog. Gosh, these folks were intellectual! In the 12 minutes I saw, they said lots of profound stuff! Still, the movie reminded me of simpler, nuttier, drugged-out times.
