Sherlock Holmes (1954)

It's great to see a pair of actors playing Holmes and Watson who are NOT trying to channel Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, but who instead bring their own interpretation of these characters to the boards. Although made with a low budget, a good company of players, loving attention to details from the canon (like the gasogene and tantulus on the side-board, the picture of General Gordon, etc.) and great cinematography more than make up for any deficiencies of budget. A refreshing take on classic characters, I only wish they had made more of them....

Warm and funny, this sherlock may not be traditional, but is comforting to watch and entertaining. Humor is a focus here more than most other interpretations bother with and his relationship with watson is actually believabe as a friendship. The skits are short and easy with plenty of cheese. My favorite episode is with a young "alfred pennyworth" where the tensions are high. Sherlock tries to find where the bodies are hidden and almost runs out of time. A bit macabre, i love how the actors play off each other. "Alfred" has such a calm and confident menace. Its great.

I see we have comments from the shallow end of the gene pool here. This series was made by an American production company, many directed by German-American director Steve Previn, others by Americans Jack Gage, with scripts written by Americans for American television, and was shown to American audiences. Much like many British B horror movies of the 1950s-60s that were made in Eastern Europe with local technical staff and actors for all but the starring roles. And much like many classic Hollywood movies that used British actors in starring roles.
