I must state that this film has been amongst the most warm and sentimental that I have viewed for quite some time. Natalie Wood as Susan Mathews simply compels you to strain your eyes and ears for any movement or word made. Why had she not got the same raving reviews that was benevolently passed on to other child stars of the 30s & 40s? The plot is reminiscent of the Depression era in the US where most farmers from the Dust Bowl ventured otherwise to far territories to take up contracted farming. Oh that Walter Brennan.... I love to hate him. He really irritated me in Meet John Doe too. I enjoyed this one very much and am heartily endorsing it with 5 stars. HIGHLY RECOMMEND VIEWING.

I liked the Doc & her older sister, the middle one was a bit of a menace & tattle tale. Susan was adorable deciding to get lambs and a loan. Her visit in the bank sitting there making her case as to why she wanted to borrow money for the purchase of her precious little Lambs and weren't they beautiful! She was so loving & endearing with the Lambs. Darn if Susan wasn't going to keep her promise and take care of her Lambs, she loved them, neither hell or or high water she made sure to go protect them from the storm at her own peril. I really liked this movie. I love the animals and the tender way Natalie Wood takes care of them, especially the lambs. Sadly Natalie almost drown when the bridge she was crossing collapsed. She wore a thick bracelet on her wrist for the rest of her life to cover what she felt was a deformity caused by the fall and her mother's inability to take her to the doctor, because she feared the studio would think Natalie was too much of a bother. I also thought Walter Brennan was kind of mean and too old to be the father, of course he always looked old. Thank goodness for the sister and the doctor…
