Somewhat odd and propagandish bit here admonishing travellers to ONLY bring five pounds in notes. Heaven forbid we'd have to pick you up from the airport when you spent all your money abroad. interesting piece of history here.

I wonder how long this rule was in effect? How rigorous was this enforced and for what purpose was it for? I assume most Englishmen went to France or Spain for holiday, did the same hold true for those Countries? This is a interesting piece of history. Was the Bank of England behind it ?
