Wow, a silent Jam Handy! Of course, it's no match for the advertising classics which would follow. But it's still an interesting and slightly offensive peice of propaganda that entertains and puzzles.

For the Twenties, this is a pretty forward-looking way to explain electricity to kids. The "Horse power" theme was a novel way to catch young folks' attention. As agitprop, it surely matches anything the Soviets had at the time. Cinematicially, the shot from UNDER the horse stampede feels ahead of its time. As for the title cards there's some nice writing, esp toward the end; seems like GE's or whoever's money was well spent here. Query: Were these played in the classroom and if so, did they play 78s on a victrola or something to provide sound?

The titles were done in Futura, which Karl Renner produced in 1927 in Germany. It might be possible that Jam Handy got some early matrices to use for these titles, but I doubt it. I'd guess this movie is closer to 1929 or 1930.
