Bookkeeping and You (1947)

This early Coronet film goes through a high school bookkeeping class and gives the reasons why all the students are taking it. This mostly involves students needing to know how to keep the books in various family businesses, meaning that their parents probably made them take the class. We get to see the parents of these students use bookkeeping in various Mom and Pop businesses, a girl who is learning bookkeeping because she wants to become a stenographer and perhaps get promoted to secretary in an office full of male accountants, and the rich kid being forced to take the class so he wonÃÂt…

Although this features apparently some of the many characters from Shy Guy (although, to be honest, I only recognized my man, Dick York), it doesn¡¯t hold much of it¡¯s charms. This is pretty much a straight (excuse the pun) by the books affair that explains why everyone needs a bit of book-keeping in them. Although this is called accounting today, and nearly all of it is automated, this is interesting if you¡¯ve got a bit of math in you and want to see how they did it in the old days. Or maybe you want to see Dick York as a Farmer¡¯s boy (in suspenders!) Whatever.

Henry (played by Mickey Hugh) brags to fellow high schoolers he's going to be a Senator. Maybe governor! Regardless, he and the rest of them sign up for bookkeeping class, as a narrator tells viewers how it may help them get a promotion at work. This fairly matter-of-fact short features a sequence of Howard Winslow in his dad's store (called Hanson's Store for some reason). Yeah, have some groceries and pay at the end of the month. Maybe that worked on Walnut Street in 1947. Howard collects $5 for his work. The store is full of boxes of Vel, Dreft and Duz. There's only a short scene with Dick…
