The influence of the Hollywood film is exemplified by this outstanding movie. Many young girls would have seen this film and said "I must try to be like this young star" Now as grandmothers, they can look with pride at their children and grand children.

Although the girl is most certainly precocious, she does do a lot more on ice than to just skate "backward and forward". She was as good as many Olympic skaters I see nowadays and I wonder how many of these critics could skate one foot on ice without their ankles wobbling. It also takes a lot of skill to ice-skate and play an instrument at the same time as that band did. I also like the ending.

1939 was apparently a year for skating extravaganzas. Sonja Henie did her usual couple of musicals and over at M-G-M, the costume designers fitted skates for Joan Crawfords The Ice Follies of 1939 (!) Poverty rows Sol Lesser (and was there ever anyone Lesser than Sol?) added 6-year-old Irene Dare to the lineup, and the little Miss Dare could skate both forwards and backwards while smiling prettily. The yarn spun around all the skating is the old wheeze about a humbug uncle (Roscoe Karns) riding on the coattails of his precocious nieces in order to enrich himself. Does little Irene vow em in…

An awful film, with the least appealing tyke you can imagine in the lead. She jumps in people's laps while they're reading the paper! She pours sand on people's heads as they sit at the beach! And instead of giving her a good spanking, they praise her for her impishness. I suffered through half of this cruddy little movie and gave up. The conceit that a Florida nightclub would build an ice-skating rink specifically for an unknown kid who can skate backwards is highly improbable, but then again, someone built a whole movie around it -- maybe it's not so far-fetched.
