Synopsis

Joe Sullivan is itching to get out of prison. He's taken the rap for his accomplice Rick, a sadistic mobster who owes him $50,000 from the job they pulled. Rick sets up an escape for Joe, assuming that Joe will be killed while fleeing. But with the help of his love-struck girl Pat and his sympathetic legal caseworker Ann, Joe gets further than Rick intended...

In this low-budget 1948 film noir, several characters grew up in poverty in an area of San Francisco called Corkscrew Alley and go on to a life of crime. Joe (Dennis O'Keefe) is a convict who has taken a fall for a mobster, Rick, (Raymond Burr) who has gone on to a life of wealth and luxury, padding around his large home in a silk robe. Pat (Claire Trevor) is Joe's long-term and long-suffering lady friend and also part of Rick's organization. Pat works as an agent of Rick to help spring Joe from jail. This movie is a classic Noir. Very low budget, but great performances by all. Many classic lines.,and scenes in this one. Raymond Burr is the ultimate villain. Claire Trevor is the ultimate moll. The sweet Marsha Hunt is great as the other woman. Good roles for John Ireland, Whit Bissell, Ray Teal, and Regis Toomey. Very watchable. One of Eddie Muller's faves.
