Synopsis
Presented in all eight original episodes, Roots is a saga of African-American life, based on Alex Haley's family history. Kunta Kinte is abducted from his African village, sold into slavery, and taken to America. He makes several escape attempts until he is finally caught and maimed. He marries Bell, his plantation's cook, and they have a daughter, Kizzy, who is eventually sold. As a Caucasian male, I first watched Roots when it aired in 1977 at age 14. Now, in my 60s, I’m grateful to have experienced it again. I was struck by how much I remembered because it left such a lasting impact. Even then, I couldn’t comprehend the cruelty of slavery, and rewatching in 2025 reminded me just how devastating those times were. Sadly, discrimination still exists today, but I hold hope that one day it will end. Alex Haley’s Roots is a timeless masterpiece that deserves to be cherished forever.
