Tod Slaughter had the best evil laugh in movies. He's especially jolly here, a lot more fun than that old sourpuss Johnny Depp in the recent musical version of the famous story. It's pretty discreet about the business with the meat pies, but with Slaughter giving one of his best performances, who needs gore? It's also pretty funny, which was typical of Slaughter's films. Also recommended: THE FACE AT THE WINDOW.

Modern audiences will likely find this take on Sweeney Todd strange, seeing as the 1979 musical and the later Tim Burton adaptation cast Todd as an anti-hero and turn the ST tale into a revenge tragedy. Here, Todd is an all-out bad guy: greedy, sleazy, and blood-thirsty. The plot is rather uneven and sometimes poorly paced, but overall, Tod Slaughter's antics as Sweeney steal the show. His performance is campy and fun; the supporting actors are all game too, especially the woman playing Mrs. Lovett. The audio is, as other reviewers have noted, wobbly.
