The Spanish Civil War was an awful and tragic affair, but as now, a film can take such a setting, and use it to stage a light romantic comedy. Pure silly escapism in 1936. The filming is wonderful and you can physically re-enter the world before WWII both in Britain and Spain. Almost fairy tale like with characters and a comic sense right out of P. G. Woodhouse. The writing and the acting are spot on for such a piece and even the light comic mystery plot still stands up. Wonderful direction from Reginald Denham and the copy quality is great. All this in just over 1 hour.
