At just under an hour, this plays more like a mediocre road film than a grand Kurosawa epic. The film is about a disguised lord and his loyal samurai as they try to slip past enemy guards, with the tension hanging in the balance over whether their act will hold. It’s not the sweeping spectacle of Ran or Seven Samurai, but more like a short, tense stage play brought to film—quick, witty, and somewhat effective for its runtime.
