..like you wouldn't believe! My dad recalled (in the 1920's and 30's) barges loaded with trash and garbage, machines, appliances, old cars, etc hauled out into the middle of Lake St Clair and dumped. Otta sight, otta mind! Then he worked for a while at the Detroit sewage disposal plant where he learned that the tee at the foot of Alter road was sometimes opened allowing raw sewage to flow into the Detroit River instead of flowing to the disposal plant downriver. Needless to say, he forbid us to swim at Belle Isle. The air pollution cleared up rapidly in the 60's, but parts of the Great Lakes…

This film follows a canoeist in his journey through time as he paddles in the Great Lakes of North America. Sung as a lilting, entertaining ballad with humor, the canoeist explains the geological creation (the rise) of the great lakes, as it changes through time. The film ends with modern changes, (the fall) depicting locks and dams, factories, and pollution. The film is not dated nor ever will be. I have shown this film in grades 7-10 and in college earth science classes. This copy in the Archives is slightly degraded both visually and aurally but is still worth viewing. There is opportunity…
