Who doesn't love George Raft?. He is such a well disciplined actor. He doesn't try to steal the scene from other actors and I like that in him. Ava Gardner is radiant as usual. This movie is kind of folksy in spots because it is in a small town. But it is well written. The characters are interesting, the plot is a bit typical, but it wasn't boring. This has the juice that makes for a good forties Noir movie you can watch on a Saturday afternoon with a bowl of popcorn and some soda. There is a playful quirk at fifteen minutes and twenty seconds.
