Archive Watch is a free app for browsing and watching public-domain and openly licensed films and television from the Internet Archive. It is available on Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, Google TV, Fire TV, Roku and the web. By using it you agree to these terms.
What it costs
Nothing. Archive Watch is free, contains no advertising, sells nothing, and has no subscription. There is no account to create, and no payment details are ever requested.
Where the films come from
Every title is streamed directly from the Internet Archive, a non-profit digital library. Archive Watch hosts no video of its own; it is a way of finding and playing what the Archive already makes publicly available.
Titles are included on the basis that they are in the public domain in the United States, or are published by their rights holder under an open licence such as Creative Commons, or are works of the United States government. Copyright is territorial: a film that is public domain in the United States may still be protected where you live, and it is your responsibility to know the position in your own country.
We assess rights from the evidence each item carries — its stated licence, its publication date, and the collection it belongs to — and we hide what does not pass. That process is careful but it is not infallible. If you believe something here infringes your rights, tell us and we will remove it. Write to ben@learningischange.com with the title and, if you can, the archive.org identifier. Because the video is hosted by the Internet Archive rather than by us, a takedown may also be directed to them at archive.org/about/terms.
Metadata and attribution
Posters, synopses, cast and ratings are drawn from TMDb, OMDb, TheTVDB, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons, and remain the property of those sources and their contributors. This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.
What you may do with it
Watch, browse, and enjoy. The films themselves are public domain or openly licensed and you may do with them whatever their status allows — that is the point of the public domain. The app itself is provided for personal use; please do not redistribute it, resell access to it, or present it as your own.
Your data
Favourites, playlists and watch progress are stored on your own device, and are synced across your devices only through your own iCloud or Google account if you choose to sign in. We operate no servers and receive no information about you. See the Privacy Policy for the detail.
No warranty
Archive Watch is provided as it is, without warranty of any kind. The catalog changes as the Internet Archive changes: films are added, moved and occasionally removed by their uploaders, and a title that played yesterday may not play today. We do our best to detect and hide what has stopped working, but we cannot guarantee that any particular film will be available, complete, or of any particular quality. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss arising from your use of the app.
