Tomboy Cindy is bummed out because she wasnÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂt invited to her friend MaryÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs birthday party, presumably because of her tomboyish ways. Fortunately, her fairy godmother comes and saves the day, mostly by waving her magic wand to make rules of party etiquette appear in the air in front of her. Cindy and her friend Dennis (who is also afflicted with the same psychosis, even seeing the fairy godmother in a print of WhistlerÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs Mother) have fun at the party by being good little conformists and following all the fairy godmotherÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs rules.…

In this real drop down corker of a movie, Cindy, real tomgirl that she is who plays basketball and fishes all day, wonders why she's not invited to Mary's party. She weeps to her mother (who is very strange looking and has no eyebrows) before she goes to bed. That night, her fairy godmother wakes her up and tells her that she's invited to the party, and takes Cindy to the party, while trotting out conformitive hints and tips with her wand like "leave on time" and "be a good loser". Soon, the fairy godmother leaves, Cindy cries for her not to leave as she is woken up by her mother, who says…

The real story of this short is not to 'play fair" or to "be on time." It's the story of angst, of a girl who enjoys playing basketball and baseball, going fishing, and has scenes of the Old West on her bedroom walls--but one who dreams to wear dresses and fit in to society's expectations of girls. Helping her along is Dennis, who drawls his lines in one long stream, and a dream-sequence fairy godmother, who talks to everyone like she's addressing pre-schoolers on Romper Room. Either the two are hopeless as actors or the director was too lazy to get a decent performance out of them. Or both.…

As a High School Sophomore in 1973, one semester instead of P.E. I had to take a class called Health. We were taught grooming, hygene, etiquette, etc. They showed a lot of movies like this (but not this one), going back to the mid 50's. I think kids of 1955 would have thought it was corny, let alone kids of 1973. I find this film quite charming and well-made: I had to find out how it ended. A remake with Roseanne Barr and Tom Selleck as Cindy and Dennis would make money.
