As was typical of those days, this is how they made them. And to the guy below complaining about the sound qualitiy, etc. well this was the best they could do for the most part. Dont forget the movie industry was not that old then. And Can you do better if you were alive then to make this kind of sensitive film? Give us all a break. For a sensitive subject matter, and for the times it was done, I give it a 5 star.

How really quaint that the word "syphilis" isn't actually uttered even once, unless I missed it. We do hear "venereal disease." I watched this only because I have a minor interest in the films of director Edgar G. Ulmer. The dialog was OK for me...though the ambient sound and background music were wobbly.
