Don't Look in the Basement (1973)

Sure it's slow seventies horror with bad sound and production values. But it is quite a good, creepy story with some plot points that are expected and others that won't fail to suprise.

Ok this is a low budget gore film with a no-name cast. "Asylum" films seemed to be a popular theme for late night horror at that time, and you could say that this has a certain period charm. This story actually starts off quite well by introducing the viewer to some pretty weird inmates, then the "accident" leading to the death of the chief doctor, and the arrival of the idealistic blonde girl who eventually persuades the woman in charge to take her on the staff, only to find that her room is on the same floor as the inmates, and none of the doors has locks... I don't really know why I watched it, or even continued to watch it.. is is a very disturbing movie. But it had its moments, and the plot was not entirely stupid. What I found most amazing about this movie was the simplicity of the surrounding, the minimalism, the almost empty rooms, the empty hallways, and even the "desolate" meadows outside. It was really a place of emptiness, and as such does justice to the film. On the downside, the "insanity" of most of the patients was not convincing, and was way too "acted", even though both the "doctor" and "Sam" did a great and almost convincing job.…
