I'm just 4 years younger than this movie. I read the story in 8th grade. The movie follows the story wonderfully and while nothing compares to the characters conjured in the imagination, created in the image of Dicken's descriptions, the movie is impressive with it's interpretations, well done. Well written and directed brilliantly (consider the times), it's popular in classic cinematography for a reason. And I never have, so I went into this not knowing anything about it, other than it is a famous story by Charles Dickens. I don't know if it followed the book or not, but basing my review on the movie's storyline and pace, acting, characters, and entertainment value alone, pretending it's NOT a Dickens story, I would still call this a Classic Film and give it 5 stars.

this is one of the best Great Expectations I've seen and Alec Guinness has a part in t when he's so young you wouldn't recognize him. The ending is modified slightly from the book but it doesn't detract from either the book or the movie. And it skips over parts which are not critical to the story. The people in Dicken's tales are more human than any I've met on the streets!

I haven't had a chance to view this avi, but this film is generally considered to be the best ever made of a Dickens story (at least); it's a truly great movie, and a truly great book (you should read the book). The actors include some of the greatest Britain ever produced, the director is arguably one of Britain's very best (David Lean, of Bridge on River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, Dr Zhivago etc etc fame), and the story is one of England's greatest. It doesn't get much better than this for a b/w period film.

This is perhaps the finest rendition of a book to movie as I have ever had the pleasure of watching. At 39 years old, I have been recently catching up on the classic literature I had missed as a boy. I once played a part in a dickens play, A christmas carol, and have ever been a fan of his work. I had just finished listening to the audiobook version of this story and was curious to see if there was a movie version. I found this and was quite amazed as each character was almost exactly as I had imagined it in my mind. Thank you for making this wonderful film to be available for all to see.…

It was about 1963 - requirement to read this. I struggled in middle school, as it was called then. The ONLY thing I recall was the character's name and how I suffered in my reading. I mean, it's not like I didn't like the subject of English. I thrive in it and was a late bloomer - had to wait to high school and books like, Lord of the Flies, Catch-22, etc. etc. This movie is super. If I'd only know that Haley Mills' dad was in it back then. I mean I saw The Parent Trap (1961 version seven times). - I'm now going to REALLY read the book.
