David O. Selznick film from RKO. Richard Dix is in top form as a tough con on a chain gang. The things depicted in the film were all too common place at the time the film was made, and shows them for all their ugliness. No hearts and flowers here. A very young Tom Brown was beginning to show his acting chops in this film too. Was it an "expose'" much like "They Made Me A Fugitive"? I'm not sure. Excellent acting, good sets. The story races on at a quick pace, but it's worth watching if for no other reason than the depiction of life on a chain gang. The Duke and Johnny relationship is well done and likely the gist of the film. Watch it.

When one says the phrase: They don't make films like that today, one probably has this one in mind. No annoyingly dramatic music, instead pure classic acting and amazingly well shot pictures. If you bored by standard mainstream-dramas you should take one hour off and watch this wonderful movie. It even has a cool last line.

A very good movie for the time it was made. It is not as emotionally gripping as Paul Muni in "I Was A Fugitive From A Chain Gang," but it has its place in showing the cruelty of a chain gang. Tom Brown and Richard Dix do well in their roles as does the rest of the cast.

I am a disabled Vietnam veteran. Your review is right on the money. I agree 100% ! Too many wimps watch these movies, they don’t have a clue about our country history. We are patriotic Americans ! The Greatest Generation were the Greatest American Patriots. The liberals are mentally unstable. Bob Hope recognizes black actor Willie Best as one of the best actors he has ever worked with in his career. Clarence Muse anther first class black actor one of my favorites is college educated. Mr. Muse appeared in the movie Car Wash. Check it out, quite a career.
