A Night for Crime (1943)

I wasn't expecting much from this movie and was pleasantly surprised. It's not a bad flick. Lyle Talbot and Glenda Farrell are ok and the guy who played the police captain was good too. Only the dimwit cop played by Ralph Sanford marred an otherwise reasonably good story. Alternating between stupid and rude, his character should have been cut from the script. Production values were reasonably high. Some of the supporting cast were amateurs, but that is to be expected in a B film. This is one of the better old movies as far as the story line goes. You could figure out that the chauffeur was mixed up in it, but they snuck in the crazy sister. Usually you could figure out who was guilty half way through the movie. I would give it a top rating, but the pacing was a little off. Still I enjoyed it and watched the whole movie.

Certainly entertaining enough, even if the plot is weak and to a certain extent, nonsensical. But, that was Hollywood. Glenda Farrell really carries the show as the fast-talking sharp-witted newspaper reporter. Lyle Talbot makes a nice foil for Farrell's craziness. Ralph Sanford plays the obligatory dumb cop, whose somewhat comic presence could have been done without, leaving a tighter film all around. All the other actors are okay. The plot eventually takes some unexpected twists and turns which, as unlikely as they may be, keeps one guessing until the end.
