Synopsis
Suave French actor Philippe Martin provokes a scandal when, in a darkened theater, he mistakes young Monique for his mistress, Yvonne, and tries to kiss her. Charged with assault, the quick-thinking Philippe claims it's French tradition to do as he did, and is let go. To his surprise, Philippe learns that Monique has paid his fine. As the tabloids exploit the situation, Monique dates Philippe, until a photo appears of him kissing Yvonne.

This is a charming little film with some wonderful comedic moments thanks to some of the best character actors of the 1930s. Roland Young -- AKA: Cosmo Topper Hugh Herbert -- of "Footlight Parade 1933" Erik Rhodes -- reprises his character from "Top Hat" Mischa Auer -- of "My Man Godfrey" and the wonderful Donald Meek whose portrayal of the judge is a comedic masterpiece (you may remember him as the whiskey drummer, Samuel Peacock, in "Stagecoach"). And many others any fan of the films of 1930s will recognize. Sit back and enjoy a series of great performances that carry a rather predictable…

I love this movie; it's got some wonderful social satire, great tongue in cheek humor, and the romance is okay, too (probably it's weakest point, though). The film quality is fair--and completely black in the theater scenes. Good leads, but the supporting cast makes it great (especially the judge!)

Only on a rainy afternoon... I found this film predictable and drawn-out. Yet, liked it enough to watch the whole thing even though I knew how it was going to end. I just had to make sure she ended up with the ... spoiler here ... I thought the sound had very low volume, even with my speakers all the way up.
