Only the Valiant (1951)

The movie itself is terrible - long, drawn-out and boring. The story is on the droll side, yet the acting and character relations/group dynamic are all outstanding and exemplary and make this movie a winner in my book. If you like movies that are more thoughtful and full of opportunities for deep character analysis over ones that are just story based, you'll really like this one. There are two kinds of movies, ones you see and ones you watch. You watch this one.

What can you say about a great film? Mr.Peck's performance is above par as the by the book soldier who does have a heart, Mr. Bond as the drunken but lovable Irish corporal, Mr. Chaney as the A-hab doing excellant work before being given those below average assignments in below average films that eventually cause his death(that and drink as well as criticism he never live to his Father's expectations)and Mr. Brand job as the bullying sargent in preparation for other roles to come (ie Stalag 17) and kudos to Mr. Young for his well done but brief role as the leutanant. There are few movies that have such continuous and sustained tension. This was an excellent movie, packed good actors. The section from where they arrived the abandoned fort to the end was terrific. Very well put together movie.

Gregory Peck lives up to his traditional righteous and honorable Caricature that we remember him for, and does the right thing no matter what. And it's equally satisfying to see Ward Bond and Lon Chaney doing their usual roles so well. Michael Ansara, who plays the 'enemy Indian' in this movie, gave me my first positive impressions of the sensitivity and humanity of native Americans and injustice done to the Indian nation when I started watching him as Cochise in 'Broken Arrow' in the '50's. Unrealistic, illogical, unbelievable, and laden with lame dialog and cardboard characters. Why didn't they realize that if you don't have a decent script, everything you do is wasted?
