Synopsis
Richard Walters is condemned to death for a murder he claims not to have committed. He arrives on death row just before a brutal inmate leads the other convicts in a violent uprising. Walters gets caught up in the riot, while on the outside his friends are trying to find evidence of his innocence.

I was surprised at the subject matter of this film. I knew this was the film that would launch many prison cliches- lights flashing when an execution happened, etc, but keeping in mind that these cliches did not exist when this film came out I was moved by the performances. A black inmate talking about a segregated heaven and hell, guards taking the place of the men on death row, the film even starts with a quote from the warden of Sing Sing against the death penalty! It would take decades for DNA evidence to begin to show us how many went to their deaths who were innocent. But this film…
