Synopsis
A French-Canadian girl is a champion bronc rider and is also a nightclub singer. An ambitious young man sees her act one night and is struck by her talent, realizing that she is good enough to become a Broadway star. He convinces her to accompany him to New York, where she indeed does become a Broadway star. However, the young man finds himself being squeezed out by greedy Broadway producers who see the talented young girl as their own personal gold mine.

This is a generally enjoyable little film, with a fair amount of humour, an engaging story, and some nice songs. There aren't that many songs in fact, this isn't a musical in the sense that the characters spontaneously burst into song: the only songs are by Fifa (the girl of the title), who is a singer. There are some oddities in the production at times, which may be just editing/recording glitches, I don't know. Fifi D'Orsay played the same bubbly character in all of her movies. Although she was sometimes billed as French, she was born in Montreal. Her upbeat personality and cheerfulness keep an otherwise tedious film entertaining.

A so-so comedy which lapses into mediocre romance movie. Watch it if you want to know who Fifi D'Orsay was - you'll find that her winning attributes are her cuteness and pluckiness - she couldn't act and she's a mediocre dancer and singe. The other principles are acceptable stock characters - Astrid Allwyn is Fifi's friend, until she gets bitter about her lack of success; Edwin Maxwell plays his usual gruff, cigar-chomping role. Somewhat of a embarassing attempt to make a two bit singer a star, Girl From Calgary is probably more known for it's title (since I'm a Calgarian) than anything else. Fifi D'Orsay stars as a french girl struggling to Make It Big in Calgary of all places, soon, someone discovers her and she's shipped off to broadway, leaving all she loved behind! Will she reconcile with everyone? Fifi can't act, sing or dance, but she does. All three.
