I just finished watching this film, and I can't recommend it enough. Creighton Chaney plays a college athelete, just three years after his film debut. He is in top shape, and shows a lot of skin to prove it. And, he sings. Lounging on top of a piano, accompanied by the Three Lieutenants and Arthur Lake (presumably) playing the keys, he does a passable job on "Thou Art My Baby." The opening of this film was shot on the campus of University of California at Berkeley, as anyone who went there could testify. There are a few shots of the campus in the film, mostly west of the campanile. Nice performances by Sterling Holloway. All around this is a fun, innocent film. Wish there had been more of the Crane Sisters.

I can't believe this is rated 4/10 stars on the Internet Movie Database! This is enjoyable escapist fun. The plot may be a bit average, and they should've made Lon Chaney's character more big headed, and I didn't quite understand how he suddenly was going out with Gwen (my fault- missed a bit perhaps). Still, it's short, sweet, and the music is cool. Lon Chaney sings, and is shirtless. What more do you need from a film?

What makes this collection of cliches and stereotypes palatable (and the movie enjoyable) is that it doesn't at all take itself seriously. Instead, the audience is invited in to enjoy the hijinks and the clowning. The movie opens with a pan shot of a campus, then cuts to a guy in a white sailor's gob hat looking up something in a dictionary (while his girlfriend lies next to him, staring off into space): "College, kol ij. An institution of learning devoted to the pursuit of the higher arts." In the next scenes, we learn which "higher arts" they had in mind. That alone is worth a smile. The…

Part of a long and honorable Hollywood tradition of college-set films where the men are all athletes, the women are all working on their MRS degree and students (who seem to all be in their mid-20's) do almost anything but attend classes. Interesting mostly for the chance to see several names very early in their career. I wonder, is there a film in which Arthur Lake _doesn't_ play his "Dagwood" character?
