Mickey Rooney has the title role. Rooney idolizes his father who has turned to drink. Rooney has the type of emotional scenes he did so well. I've past over this one for a long time and now I wish I hadn't. This is one of the best performances by Mickey ever. The movie is a little slow paced but what a treasure.

Some people think Rooney was at his best in the 40s and the Hardy's junk, but those were junk in comparison to his earlier works like this one and another, Little Lord Fauntleroy and the Healer aka Little pal. As he ages I think success went to his head, but he did fine later in roles after his big stardom days were over in Quicksand and some others even much later.Rooney was a true talent as a child actor...to bad he got so damned ugly.. but so did I. :0/

It's too bad that Mickey Rooney was so distinctive personally. As an actor, this can work for or against you; you may be typecast constantly. If he were more the everyman, say like Tom Hanks, his career might have been more evenly sustained. He had talent. He could sing, dance, play comedy and drama (like most comedic actors). He could do them all very well. Think about this, who else could hold their own against Judy Garland? And while he could match her dynamism, he could also play subdued roles equally well.
