Film-Noir (1944)

★★★ · Well-acted, scripted, and directed film noir, but somewhat unconvincing · GH3K3 · 2026-07-09

If you can loosen up your suspension of disbelief a tad more than usual, "The Suspect" is an enjoyable enough crime suspense thriller, even if somewhat set-bound and with a necessary implausible ending for the sake of the censors. Crime must NOT pay, you know, at least in old movies... Bosley Crowther of the NY Times, in his review of "The Suspect, found it hard to believe that Ella Raines, Laughton's love interest, would fall for such a portly gent, but I could get past that due to the impeccable script and acting. But you could see that ending coming a mile away, unfortunately.
