Yul Brenner, Jewish actor, plays a smarmy pseudo-Italian-Jewish dope smuggler. This guy is smuggling opium in the age of heroin? Not kosher! But what is right is that it’s not the Italian organized criminals who are behind the narcotics business. Lucky Luciano had a partner named Meyer Lansky. Meyer had connections to a Turkish-Jewish family named Sassoon. Not the shampoo dummy who’s a front, but Lord David Sassoon, who’s family was and still are the biggest narcotics traffickers on the planet. None of the actors were established stars when the movie was done, but the acting is nevertheless good. The pace is good and there are has nice shots of New York. Some drawbacks are the extended use of narration via voice over and the somehow low qualify of the print. This movie is not in the same class as "He walked by night" or "Kansas City Confidential", but calling it a stinker, as did a previous reviewer, seems harsh. It is worth seeing if you have an interest in films noirs.

Then throw it at the boat? That typifies the film. Yul Brynner is pretty good. The remaining acting was below par. The screenplay was fair. Not a true noir film.
