This is quite an impressive Poverty Row Film Noir. The story is solid except for the already pointed out contrived appearance of the cops at the end (having the lawyer simply call them would have worked just fine). In places, it is even perfection itself: when Steve (Hugh Beaumont) tells Julie (Frances Rafferty) they may not be legally married, it serves two purposes: getting Julie back into her aunt's house, and, just as importantly, keeping her desires dependent upon conditions he controls. I don't know he ever had the guts to rob banks, but he did steal from stores all the time and once even said he would kill me if i didn't help him steal the stuff which turned out to be a load of hogwash. He was a manipulating little worm and screwed up in the head just like good old Hugh so this story to me is very plausible. I enjoyed this movie despite the implausible responses of the female lead. A person of her alleged good character, would have certainly sought police intervention upon discovery of the depth of her new husbands lack of integrity. But then, it would be a much shorter play. Hugh Beaumont plays the sociopath well. One wonders what skeletons hide in Ward Cleaver’s closet. Frances Rafferty does a good job also of portraying the confused, antonymic victim, even if one wonders how such a thing could actually be. I also enjoyed seeing Dick Elliott in the malt shop.
