Synopsis
In this installment, the Shadow Yagyu clan plots to solidify its power by taking Ogami’s coveted position of shogun’s executioner for its own. The legendary assassin escapes with his infant son, Daigoro, and swears vengeance.

This first film in the series is not as wild as some of the later films, but all the elements are in place - albeit still in developing form. The stylised violence and cartoonish gore, loner main character, beautiful backdrops and exaggerated villains are lead up to the final, lunatic battle scene. Great stuff that paved the way for what is to come later in the series.
