I love the old Roy Rogers and early John Wayne movies because they both feature Gabby Hayes, one of the best character actors in western movies (maybe in all of moviedom). He can steal a scene just by mugging at the camera. What makes him unique among sidekicks is that he isn't just comic relief, he's also a tough and reliable partner in rough situations. Someone you depend on in a tight spot. In addition, despite his obvious foibles, he is extremely likeable as a character. Having seen him in over 30 movies, I've never seen a weak performance.
