Sort of a mix between ÂThe Front Page and ÂBackdraftÂ, ÂNight Alarm focuses on a reporter trying to break away from the gardening desk, to scoop a story about a series of Fires happening around the city. He blames it all on the big industrialist in the town whoÂs got the mayor and the police captain in his back pocket. Things get even more interesting when the cute girl theyÂve hired to replace him in the gardening beat is actually the industrialistÂs daughter. As the plot unravels, and more fires ensue, you can just imagine how the movie ends, with the industrialistÂs daughter being caught…

This movie is pretty good. It gets side tracked too many time from the mystery of who is the firebug. Too much romance plot and a really annoying musical number. Bruce Cabot is actually really good as the star reporter trying to track the firebug and romance a female co-worker. The scenes of the buildings burning is done really well. I think the cuts in this film are actually due to print damage and poor re-splicing. Otherwise a worthwhile film to see.

There is a story in the IMDB website from a previous owner of a copy of the film and he had the same problems as you have stated. I too am disapponted because the director was called the King of the Serials, both silent and sound. He was reowned for his professional methods, so this must be a poor copy of his film

Good guy gets the girl in the end? Who would have ever thought to stick that in a 30ish movie? How utterly unique.Why it's almost as unique as the gangster calling the leader "Hey Boss". OK, enough wisecracking.. Alexander Dexter is portrayed very poorly even though there is some good acting and the singing bit was nearly as bad. Either the director thought he was funny or he was sleeping with the producers daughter or something, but the singer has GOT to go. To bad he didn't get caught in the last big fire scene. This is the stereotypical 'big evil dude controls everything BUT... The hero and his organization (Newsppr) BUT... hero loves evil dudes daughter. Evil dude uses daughter to manipulate hero, but evil dude gets his comeuppance in appropriate manner' film. The only problem is that the film is BADLY cut up in some areas, sigh... Whenever that happens I'm reminded of 'Murder on the Screen' And the arsonist who causes this mess? 'Alexander Dexter', some BLATANTLY foreign guy... Sigh. -uniQ
