One of my favorite noirs and I’ve seen a lot. Probably my favorite director of the era too. The scene with the drummer was just amazing as well as the scene on the subway platform and the whole section with the Raines character trailing the bartender every night. The beginning was good too, setting the scene for the rest of the film. Siodmak sure knew how to create a perfect noir atmosphere. I think he directed the Killers with Burt Lancaster too, another film with an amazing noir atmosphere. A must see for fans of the genre along with the Dark Corner featuring a very young and attractive…

The momentary hesitations, creating still impressions of captivity and fate, splendidly convey a sense of helplessness that is characteristic of the noir genera. Yet it is superbly-portrayed love and devotion rather than a character flaw within Ella Raines that drives this drama forward. Tone’s sociopathy and malevolence are as palpable as the wringing of his hands. This film is a true masterpiece poised on the edge of traditional noir, but with the best elements; eschewing flashbacks, a femme fatale, or a montage. It presages future works by Siodmak, and in doing so achieves an ultra-noir…

A good film, the suspence notches up and up. lots of well known actors and some great noir style camera shots, the acting is ok and although a bit slow in places well worth a viewing. they forgot the taxi diver but who cares.

Ella Raines was without question one of the most beautiful Hollywood actresses. She should have been a bigger star. Where the hell was the moguls at the time to promote her!!! Alan Curtis was a look-alike double of Clark Gable but much better looking and should have been a bigger star. Such is life! Franchot Tone was an ugly star that was billed as good looking. Always wondered about that. Anyway, the movie was at least a 3 star movie.
