Tarzan's Revenge (1938)

I enjoyed this vintage romp in the Tarzan genre. Aside from the fact that this story bears little resemblance to Edgar Rice Burrough’s story (featuring the character Jane Porter, not Eleanor!), it was fun to watch. You can’t let it bother you too much that there are Indian elephants (wrong continent, wrong biome) and zebras (plains animals) roaming thru the jungle. My favorite character was the chimpanzee—well-trained, great actor. It also didn’t hurt that the guy playing Tarzan was quite a hunk.

In his (her?) review he talks about this delightful old movie, along with a few cartoons and a serial along with the kids and some popcorn for an entertaining Saturday afternoon. What he describes was the premise of a wonderful PBS series in the '80s called Matinee at the Bijou. I can't recall the hosts name, sorry. It was a 2 hour show IIRC which featured an old cartoon, news clip (Movietone usually), a serial chapter, sometimes a short then the feature... usually some "B" movie like this one. It WAS a great way to spend a rainy or cold Saturday afternoon.

Going in you have to accept that this movie will make no sense but if you reach for some popcorn and either MST3K it or just turn off your brain and come along for the ride it's a lot of fun. I mean this is the sort of movie where there is a floor show with chorus girls at the palace in the middle of the African Jungle. Hedda Hopper, not yet the feared Hollywood gossip columnist, plays the mom and I was surprised to see she's actually a decent actress. I'd always assumed she'd given up acting because she wasn't any good at it. Eleanor and Tarzan are both played by Olympic gold medalists not…

In 1938, the extensive time wildlife footage in this nicely paced entertaining romp must have made a great impact on cinema audiences. Great White Hunters kill and capture animals and a local prince takes a shine to the heroine (Eleanor Holm). On both counts, Tarzan (Glenn Morris) is less than pleased and decides to do something about it. You know the rest. I think by far the best of the Tarzan films on this site. Morris' acting isn't up to much but, for me, Holm carries the film and the production values are higher than average.

This movie is what I used to see at the kidee's show at the Tower Theatre in Roseville Calif. In the 50s Tarzan was second only to John Wayne! This feature has a good plot with the usual animal antics.The inept greenhorn fiance' of the leading lady who shoots at everything that moves,along with some fierce natives with a traitorous guide with a quivering lip make for some great entertainment for the whole family!My suggestion would be to treat yourself and your family to a 50s style kid's saturday show.Start with a couple of toons from the cartoon chest followed by a chapter of one of the…
