Synopsis

Set in the shadows of wartime Paris, this 1940s drama directed by Albert Herman stars Lola Lane, Noel Madison and Howard Banks. When a Soviet secret agent discovers her uncanny resemblance to a dead Nazi spy, she infiltrates the enemy and works to save U.S. ships from German submarines. Assisting her on her mission are French underground agents, along with an American serving in the British armed forces.

Yes, it is an unintended comedy. I watched all of these propaganda films first hand during WWII. Yes, I'm old. It seems to me the "bad" acting, by all the characters, is a function of the real purpose of the film. They did do a good job for the intended result. There are many films on the archive that were made and funded for purposes other than typical Hollywood entertainment. I liked this one because all the characters seemed to understand it was a farce.

Released in late 1942, obviously as a propaganda tool to rally the home front against the nasty Nazis. Production values to one side, which are quite good by PRC standards, this film is totally insane. No other word for it. It would be totally laughable except that every so often people keep getting killed and sometimes that seems to play for laughs as well. Were the nasty Nazis supposed to look like total lunatics? We'll never know. Lola Lane goes through her paces as if she is only waiting for the check to clear. The rest were glad to have work other than in a defense plant or waiting for…
