As usual, the Amerinds in the movie are given too much credit. A tribe such as the one depicted would have had no system of writing. Being illiterate, they would indeed have been ignorant. Before the Europeans arrived, the tribes in what became the U.S. lived for the joy of killing, torturing, and raping the members of other tribes. (That's one reason that their population was so small. I recall that one tribe had the peculiar practice of killing the females before raping them.) Therefore, would it not be accurate to characterize them as savages? These Amerinds seem similar to Orientals.…

Can't imagine this being anyone's fave western, but it's fun in a dopey, half-asleep way. Still, I love the creepy, nearly silent sequence around 26 mins in -- where the cowboy takes out the guard on the hilltop.
