Synopsis
When a kindly priest is murdered while waiting at a street corner in a quiet Connecticut town, the citizens are horrified and demand action from the police. All of the witnesses identify John Waldron, a nervous out-of-towner, as the killer. District Attorney Henry Harvey is then put on the case and faces political opposition in his attempt to prove Waldron's innocence.

This movie has some great actors with compelling performances, but Dana Andrews is masterful in the lead. His courtroom scenes are riveting. A truly great film that was an early screen directorial effort by Elia Kazan.

also had premier roles in this great movie. I have come to find anything of Kazan's direction or production to be par excellence; this one a true story. I just kept thinking, " surely someone will suggest that the real, possible, murderer, might be in the courtroom, or that he most likely would have been in the reverends' confidence, therefore, a member of the Parrish". I do think they queried a bit about him possibly knowing him on a more personal basis, but there was also a lot of pressure with no real leads, and so all the "eye witnesses" took it down another road perhaps, causing that…
