Synopsis
The story takes place in 1940. On the eve of America's entry in World War II, a colonel retired to his small Southern town, and discovers that there is a plan afoot to tear down Confederate Monument Square. He begins a campaign to rally the townspeople to save the square.

It's always good to see Charles Coburn in a film, he has just the right amount of gravitas - just enough to be believable but without being dull. Donald Meek always rises above the small parts he gets and stands out despite his small stature. The story is one that even in today's jaded universe still brings a smile to the lips. Definitely worth watching.

I found it to be more of a Civil War movie than a WWII one. (That pleased me greatly...) Yes, it takes place during WWII, but this movie focuses on exploring the behaviors and attitudes of the "Old South" in relation to its own history and the War Between The States more than to what was going on in the outside world in WWII. This film is joy for anyone with an analytical mind that likes to pick apart movie subtext. If that's you and you also have interest in "Southern "Mint Julep" culture" or the Civil War... you'll flip for this one.

A fairly average, run of the mill 1940's movie here. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Good cast, some good scenes, fairly enjoyable.

You'll find this one on the "Rotten Tomatoes" web site but i don't know why, there a lot of much worse movies out there. Sure it's slow, like most old movies, no action at all really. But still it's mildly entertaining.
