Pretty well done for a 1942 B movie...........well acted...... interesting plot... Sidney Blackmer.......who plays Thatcher Colt.....the police commissioner....28 years later, played the role of Roman Castavet in Rosemary's Baby.

My name is Everett P. Digberry (Byron Foulger)... He's very good, funny, believeable. His best scene from the police lineup to the Commissioner's office stole the show. A hidden treasure. I'd watch this again.

Byron Fou]ger - I've never seen him as a lead actor before - always supporting roles - plays the same timid, meek befuddled character he usually played. Sidney Blackmer was good s the even-tempered suave police commissioner. Joaquin Edwards made a good inebriated and angry sort of has-been Italian opera singer. The other actors were also good. The whole thing is low key, mellow rather than gripping, but a decent murder mystery nonetheless. And, with a few nice twists that keep you guessing.

In most movies from this period that I've seen, the white people maintain some minimal level of politeness towards their black servants. In this movie they are openly dismissive and rude. In a weird way, that makes the film worth watching, to get a small glimpse attitudes of the time. That's the dumbest comment I've read all week, even though I understand many people had racist feelings at the time.
