Synopsis
Ride Ranger Ride is a 1936 American Western film directed by Joseph Kane and starring Gene Autry, Smiley Burnette, and Kay Hughes. Based on a story by Bernard McConville and Karen DeWolf, and a screenplay by Dorrell and Stuart E. McGowan, the film is about a Texas Ranger working undercover to protect an Army wagon train full of ammunition and supplies. The Army doesn't believe him at first, until the Comanche arrive.

Back in 1936.on a saturday afternoon,children went to the movies and this is one of the films that would be screened. It was usually the only time that they would see a film. In the evening the film would be shown to adults as a second feature and often it would be found more enjoyable than the much more expensive main film

This is one of my favorite B westerns. It's light-hearted, lots of action and politically incorrect. For what it's worth, I'm part Shawnee, and my favorite thing about this film is that throughout its length, an Indian chases one of the characters about for the purpose of scalping him. This movie is just short of Mel Brooks (except I couldn't stand 'Blazing Saddles').

A better than average Gene Autry western that was produced at the beginning of his movie career when his movies features a lot of action and not so many songs to stop the plot cold. Smiley Burnette and Max Terhune play well off each other as sidekicks. Check it out, if you like "B" westerns. There are worse ways to spend an hour.

Max Terhune, who plays Rufe in the film, had worked with Gene Autry at WLS in Chicago. Terhune had come out to Hollywood in hopes that Autry could get him a job in films. Terhune had been a rube comedian, specializing in barnyard noises and slapstick. After his appearance in the film, he was approached by Smiley Burnette, who also had worked with Autry on the road and now was his steady sidekick. In the 1930s the big draw for movie goers was to see the stars they'd been listening to over the radio. Gene Autry was big box office until WWII. While he served his country, his on screen boots were filled by Roy Rogers. Fairly uneven script for this film. Burnett and Terhune are clearly vying for screen time but they work well together to provide comic relief.
