Synopsis

The Land Unknown is a 1957 American science fiction CinemaScope adventure film about a naval expedition trapped in an Antarctic jungle. The story was allegedly inspired by the discovery of unusually warm water in Antarctica in 1947. It stars Jock Mahoney and Shirley Patterson and was directed by Virgil W. Vogel. The film's low-budget special effects include men in dinosaur suits, puppets and monitor lizards standing in for dinosaurs.

I was watching this on Svengoolie, but a storm apparently interrupted the DVR recording, and I lost the last 10 minutes. This plot is reminiscent of a Jules Vern novel. The theme is about what makes us human. Through adversity most of the party give in to their baser instincts, but our lead never falters. In the course of the trials they meet someone who has lived in isolation for over ten years. It's the 50s, and a Vernesque plot, so things resolve themselves rather nicely. As a kickback nostalgia trip, it fit the bill nicely. Low budget, but fun
