A contrived and unimaginative story, along with wooden and stilted acting in some places, destroyed the value of this film for me as cinema, but the music almost made up for the rest of it. Hearing young Johnny (William Washington) and Mary (Tommiwitta Moore) playing swing on violin and piano was a particular treat. (At the talent contest, the Stevens sisters were cute and charming with their song and tap dance routine, but Darby Jones as Stringbeans Johnston was a travesty on the banjo.) If you enjoy both classical music and swing, this film may be worth a download. Otherwise… (shrug)
