Betty, played by the lovely Shirley Deane, works at a high class wire service. No, not Western Union. In 1939, a ‘wire service’ was the code name for an off-track betting parlour. Business is bad, so the gangsters decide to go into the forged lottery ticket racket. Betty’s dad, the great character actor, J. M. Kerrigan, is a loveable drunk (alcoholics were all loveable in the movies of the day). Dad is unemployed and owes money to everyone, including the landlady, played by another fine character actor (actress?), Maude Eburne. Betty’s boyfriend, Bill, portrayed by Russell Gleason, discovers…

This is one the typical adolescent movies that draws the kid in, lets him stew for awhile, and then throws out a polished cherry. I admit defeat, and enjoyed it fully, though it was predicatable. I relished the drunken father's performance, groaned at Bill's Dudley Doo-right acting, and fawned over the daughter. It's a C (3 star movie) but as I get older appreciate the kid in myself and have to give it a B.
